Fourth graders spent several hours rotating through stations in preparation for taking the oyster spats to the reef sanctuary. They experienced casting fishing rods, measuring crabs, learning about predators, rockfish, and constructing a concrete reef ball. The reef ball was later taken to the oyster sanctuary and placed for the spats to adhere to so predators wouldn't be able to find them.

Fourth graders learned about the ways oysters are being restored in the Chesapeake Bay. To make the information more "real", they read information about the restoration processes and then created a skit to share the information. Two people in the group were chosen to be narrators while the others silently acted out the skit - charades!

Harris' Crab House was kind enough to donate oysters for the fourth graders to dissect. Now they know the parts of an oyster, how oysters function, and how oysters are in danger from natural and man-made sources.
