Ms. Watkins - Mythology and Folklore Syllabus - Spring 2023
Mythology and Folklore is an elective English course designed to introduce the student to various cultures through an exploration of their mythology and folklore. Students will primarily study the mythology and folklore of classical Greece, but other cultures will also be incorporated where appropriate. Emphasis is placed upon the influence of such works on our own 21st century American literature, culture, and language. Vocabulary derived from mythology is studied, and modern works based upon and derived from mythological subject matter are read and discussed.

English II is a required course for graduation. It builds upon and reinforces the skills acquired in English I, including genre study, critical reading, language usage and conventions, and effective writing. Additional emphasis is placed upon research skills and oral communication. Importantly, students in tenth grade will take the “English Language Arts/Literacy” portion of the MCAP assessment. (MCAP stands for Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program, and it consists of all the state tests students have to take to graduate.)
